Loose Manouche
Peter Baylor, a tipsy gypsy, stumbled into a hot jazz club and felt giddy. Struck by an old memory he slung forward his dainty guitar and played. A crowd gathered. In the blink of an eye as if summoned by the tune another gypsy appeared, dainty guitar in hand. He introduced himself as Date, Mr Nigel Date. The two exchanged melody and rhythm with grins. Andy Ross, a young bass player and regular at the club joined in while three girls began to sing and dance. It was the beginning of something old and something new, something borrowed (probably their guitars) and nothing blue about it. They called it... Loose Manouche.

Hayden Jones is a Melbourne jazz singer with a dynamic voice and wealth of experience performing with some of Australia’s best jazz musicians. Influenced early by the great Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan and Mahalia Jackson, Hayden’s performance ranges the cool restraint of a Brubeck and Bill Evan’s sound to the the driving hard bop and soul jazz grooves of Donald Byrd and Eddie Harris.

Julia Messenger
